The annual black bear harvest more than quadrupled after the Whittier Tunnel opened. In the 1990s, it was fewer than 200 a year. But by the mid-2000s, it was up to nearly 600 some years. Under such hunting pressure, the take of female bears really started climbing.
Fish and Game researchers Howard Golden and Mike Harrington have captured 18 wolverines and equipped them with GPS tracking collars in Southcentral Alaska to better understand their movements, numbers and habits.
State census reveals that Western Arctic Caribou herd population has decreased from 490,000 in 2003 to 325,000 in July 2011, prompting biologists to warn of possible harvest reductions in the future.
Although the caribou herd in Northwest Alaska has declined only 5 percent since the previous census in 2009, it's about a third smaller than it was when the herd's numbers peaked in 2003.
