Alaska has the unique opportunity to return to the wild an extirpated species -- the wood bison. We can release these magnificent animals into their traditional habitat in a way that protects the interests of our state, our residents, our nation and the animals themselves.
A project to reintroduce wood bison in Alaska, which enjoys enormous public support, is under assault over unfounded fears that it cannot coexist with resource development. Concerns have been raised that wood bison restoration might impede oil and gas drilling and other natural resource development projects, due to the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
