More than 70 years after it saw some of the fiercest fighting in World War II, Attu Island -- the farthest in the Aleutian chain -- is being readied for an extensive cleanup of decades-old military waste in what is now a wildlife refuge.

Three hundred miles west of Adak, Buldir Island is the most isolated island in the Aleutian chain. It's also more ecologically intact, making it a magnet for seabirds -- and for a special breed of scientists willing to spend a summer alone researching them.

Caribou from a herd first brought to Adak Island in the 1950s have begun to invade nearby Kagalaska Island. A recent Fish and Wildlife hunt bagged nine of the intruders, but future hunts remain in question.

Police performed a two-day sweep in the Aleutian Chain community of Unalaska this week as part of an ongoing investigation into meth and heroin sales. Nine people were arrested.
