As the largest oil spill in the history of the United States entered its second day, only a feeble containment effort had been mounted and a crowd of state, federal and oil company officials remained undecided about how to clean up the mess.
With the ash cloud from the Iceland volcano shutting down air traffic across much of Europe, a 1989 near-disaster in Alaska has been cited repeatedly in recent days as an example of what can happen when volcanic ash is sucked into jet engines.
