A doctor who specializes in helping people addicted to pain medication was preparing to attempt to treat Prince when the music star was found dead in an elevator on the first floor of his sprawling estate here last month, according to a lawyer representing the doctor.

The police conducted a manhunt in this tense and battered city on Thursday in search of whoever shot two officers as they worked at a protest after the resignation of the chief.

The shootings renewed debate over how the nightly vigils should play out, or if they should continue. While activists argued that the gunman was not one of them and denounced the attack, others wondered whether protesters, even the peaceful ones, bore some responsibility.

Two police officers were shot early Thursday outside the Ferguson police station, the St. Louis County police said. One officer, from the county police department, was shot in the shoulder, and the other, from the St. Louis suburb of Webster Groves, was shot in the face, the county police said.

Residents of Ferguson, Mo., say the fatal police shooting of teenager Michael Brown "broke the camel's back" in a community that's tired of a mostly-white city government that they believe doesn't take seriously the concerns of its mostly-black citizens.
