Photos: Ermine on the hunt along Turnagain Arm

A short-tailed weasel, or ermine, hunts along the edge of Turnagain Arm near Potter Marsh in Anchorage on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016. Weasels have brown coloring to their coats in the summer and change to white except for the tip of their tails in winter. In normal winters in Southcentral Alaska, the white coat camouflages the animal against the white snow, but this year it isn't working out so well. The ermine is a skilled hunter and must have almost daily access to rodents. The ermine is in the same family as martens, river otters, sea otters and wolverines. Information about the short-tailed weasel is from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Wildlife Notebook.
