Colorado sculptor Tim Linhart discovered his calling 20 years ago, when he started hand-carving musical instruments from ice.
Linhart went on to found the orchestra Ice Music, based in Luleå in Swedish Lapland, which utilizes Linhart's creations, which he calls "ICEstruments."
"It's one thing to build an ice instrument, it's another thing to maintain it and use it throughout time," says Linhart in a video series produced by P2 Photography.
Many variables affect the stability of the sculptures: the body heat in the igloo concert hall, the musicians holding the instruments, the audience's collective breath. Linhart meticulously cares for his creations and thinks of the listening experience as what he calls magic, something "unbelievable but happening."
