UAA’s Joshua Caleb runs record-setting sprint in Nevada invitational

UAA sophomore Joshua Caleb ran a blistering time in the 60-meter dash to set a number of records at the Silver and Blue Invitational on Friday in Reno, Nevada.

Caleb’s altitude-converted time of 6.59 seconds set new school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference marks. It was also the seventh-fastest time in Division II history and the fourth-fastest in the entire NCAA this season.

Caleb, a Nigerian national, also set a Nigerian U20 record and ran the second-fastest African U20 mark in history.

Caleb wasn’t the only record-setter for the Seawolves on Saturday. Sophomore Vivien Liessfeld set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-0 to finish tied for eighth. The previous school record of 18-7.75 was shared by Karolin Anders (2016) and Chrisalyn Johnson (2019). Liessfeld’s leap was good for ninth all-time in the GNAC.

“Really great day for the team,” UAA head coach Ryan McWilliams said in a statement. “We got this indoor season started off with the right foot forward and got a group of young athletes’ feet wet for the first time in a positive manner. Looking forward to finishing this meet off tomorrow and getting back to work once we get back to campus.”
