COVID-19 protocols force postponement of UAA women’s basketball games this week

The University of Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team had two games this week postponed due to COVID-19-related circumstances, athletic officials said.

Officials did not specify whether the postponements were because of close contacts or active cases among teammates or coaching staff. Nate Sagan, associate media relations director for UAA Athletics, said that the games were postponed because of “health and safety protocols relating to COVID-19” and did not go into more detail, citing privacy concerns.

The postponements are among several in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, including two games pushed back for the University of Alaska Fairbanks men’s basketball team.

The decision to postpone a game involves “a whole chain of events that leads to administrators looking at the health of teams and ability to travel ... it’s usually a discussion between coaches, administrators and the conference,” Sagan said.

The UAA women’s basketball games were supposed to take place on Thursday and Saturday, which were also the days of the UAF men’s games. New games for both teams have not yet been scheduled.
