UAA’s Tylantiss Atlas runs to GNAC track title in the 400 meters

UAA junior Tylantiss Atlas ran to a conference title Saturday at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field championships Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon.

Atlas ran a season-best time of 55.44 seconds to win the women’s 400-meter final by 1.02 seconds. The time meets the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II national championships, which are later this month in Michigan.

It was the first GNAC title for Atlas, who is from Dallas.

No other Seawolves won events but Joshua Wagner and Elena Cano each had two runner-up performances and Cole Nash had one.

Wagner placed second in both of the men’s hurdle events, and twice lowered his school record in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran 14.57 in Friday’s preliminaries and then went 14.54 in Saturday’s finals. In the 400 hurdles, the freshman from Germany clocked 54:11.

Cano, a senior from Alpine, Texas, placed second in the women’s heptathlon and the 400 hurdles. She also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles and was seventh in both the long jump and high jump.

In the heptathlon, she totaled 4,855 points to finish 48 points behind winner Renick Meyer of Seattle Pacific. Cano won the high jump portion of the heptathlon with a leap of 5 feet, 4.25 inches.
