Freshman puts on shooting display for UAA women’s basketball team

Rachel Ingram didn’t waste any time making her presence known in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The freshman guard poured in 21 points on 70 percent shooting from 3-point range Thursday to propel the Seawolves to victory in their first conference game of the season.

She was one of 11 players who provided points in UAA’s 79-52 win over Concordia-Portland at the Alaska Airlines Center.

A 5-foot-7 true freshman from Colorado Springs, Ingram came off the bench to sink 7 of 10 shots. She did all of her damage in 12 minutes of playing time.

Veterans Tennae Voliva and Yazmeen Goo helped the Seawolves charge to a 40-24 halftime lead. Voliva, a junior center, totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and Goo, a senior point guard, had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.

Ingram picked a good night to light it up. Take away her 7-of-10 shooting and UAA was 4 of 19 from long range and a chilly 18 of 55 from the field.

UAA hit 18 of 20 free throws and outrebounded Concordia 41-36.

The Seawolves (8-1 overall, 1-0 GNAC) got 42 points from their bench — guard Stephanie Jackson provided seven points, three assists and two steals in 17 minutes — and 34 points off turnovers. Concordia (1-8, 0-1) gave away the ball 24 times.

UAA is back at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. conference game against Western Oregon.
