UAA men’s basketball team finalizes roster with two Anchorage players

UAA announced Tuesday that two Anchorage players will join the men’s basketball team this season with one redshirting.

Danilo Guzman, a 6-2 guard, helped Anchorage Christian to the 2019 3A state title. He averaged 16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as ACS went 26-1 last season. He had a team-high 12 points in the 56-53 championship game win over Valdez.

“Danilo is a tremendous young man and we are excited about his future with Seawolf Basketball,” head coach Rusty Osborne said in a press release from UAA. “He is an excellent student and has excelled the last four years in a very good ACS program. We have followed his progress closely since getting to work with him in our summer ‘elite’ camp a few summers ago. After adjusting to the speed of the college game, and playing against some talented upperclassman every day in practice, Danilo has a chance to work his way into our rotation in the future. He is a very good shooter with a good understanding of the game.”

Evan Hoosier, a 6-8 forward, helped Dimond to runner-up finishes in the state basketball tournament the last two seasons and a title-game victory in 2017. He recorded a 2019 state tournament-best field-goal percentage (.812, 13-16) and averaged 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game according to the release. Osborne said Hoosier will redshirt the 2019-20 season.

“We are excited about Evan joining our program. He is a skilled post player who is just scratching the surface of his potential,” Osborne said. “He already has the ability to post inside, and step out for the perimeter jumper. His challenges will be embracing physicality, playing against others his size on a daily basis, and really improving his conditioning. If Evan can continue to mature physically and increase his quickness and verticality, he will be hard to guard in our league. With a good redshirt season and a lot of hard work, Evan has a chance to be an all-conference player in the future.”

Four Alaskans are now on the UAA roster with the new additions joining sophomores Eric Jenkins (Dimond) and Tobin Karlberg (Grace Christian).

The Seawolves open the regular season at home on Nov. 1-2 with games against Portland Bible.

An earlier version of this story misidentified which high school Tobin Karlberg attended.
