UAA claims sole possession of GNAC volleyball title

The Seawolves volleyball team is right where it wants to be.

Alone at the top. And in the record book.

UAA claimed sole possession of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title Thursday night by sweeping Seattle Pacific in Seattle, 25-21, 28-26, 25-21.

The win gives the Seawolves a program-record 28 victories, breaking the record set by last season's team.

The Seawolves clinched a share of the championship last week but their latest win means second-place Western Washington has no chance of tying them for first place.

UAA will take an 18-1 GNAC record into its final conference match Saturday and Western Washington is 17-3 after winning its final conference match Thursday.

It's the second straight conference title for the Seawolves and their third with coach Chris Green, who is in his ninth season with the team. UAA has finished second in the GNAC three times under Green, who understands how tough the conference is.

"That's what I just got done telling the players – we didn't play well tonight, but I congratulated them on a GNAC championship and told them it is not easy."

Five GNAC teams are poised to earn berths in the eight-team West Region playoffs, which draw teams from three conferences.

Seattle Pacific isn't one of them, but the Falcons (10-17 overall, 6-13 GNAC) are tough at home, even against the GNAC's playoff contenders. They own home-court wins over Simon Fraser and Central Washington, lost in five sets to Western Washington and in four sets to Northwest Nazarene.

"The coaches for sure thought this could be a rough night for us," Green said. "They challenged some very good teams and beat some very good teams on their home court. We thought this may be trouble for us."

Ranked ninth in the nation and first in the West Region, UAA (28-2 overall) had a rough night offensively but a couple of hitters got the job done.

Diana Fa'amausili racked up 14 kills and a .400 hitting percent and Erin Braun and Leah Swiss both delivered 10 kills and good hitting percentages. Braun recorded a single hitting error on 19 attacks for a .474 percentage and Swiss made three errors on 24 attempts for a .292 percentage.

As a team, UAA made 22 attack errors en route to a .226 attack percentage.

"When we have that many hitting errors, it's not good," Green said. "We need to be hitting .300 this time of the year."

Four Seawolves reached double figures in digs. Kyla Militante-Amper led the way with 17, Taylor Noga and Chrisalyn Johnson had 11 apiece and Morgan Hooe had 10. Swiss missed a double-double by one dig.

Braun and Fa'amausili helped UAA outblock the Falcons, 8-7. Braun had five block assists and Fa'amausili had four.

Hannah Lautenbach's 13 kills led Seattle Pacific, which posted a .180 attack percentage.
