Marvin crushes women’s record, places 2nd overall at Kesugi Ridge Run

In conditions that included snow patches, mud and standing water, Christy Marvin of Palmer set a new women's record but couldn't catch John Wros for the overall win Saturday at the sixth edition of the Kesugi Ridge Traverse in Denali State Park.

Marvin, along with Girdwood's Briana Sullivan, charged to the front of the pack on the initial climb from Little Coal Creek Trailhead to the ridge before Wros overtook them.

Wros, a veteran of 100-mile footraces, then built a comfortable lead on the technical trail before arriving at Byers Lake in 5 hours, 17 minutes.

Barely 10 minutes later, Marvin clocked in at 5:27:36, knocking nearly 26 minutes off Christie Haupert's record from 2014. Sullivan was runner-up in 5:54:04.

In the 15-mile Half Traverse, 59-year-old Jeff Young raced to a convincing win in 2:27:02. Jamie Bronga was the top woman in 2:41:10.

The Half Traverse travels from Little Coal Creek to just beyond the Ermine Hill trail junction.

Unlike previous editions of the event, which have featured uncomfortably high temperatures as well as hypothermia-inducing weather, Saturday's Traverse was pleasant with temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees.
