East’s Staples breaks a five-decade drought with state cross country title; Chugiak girls earn four-peat

Wearing a throwback East High running singlet, Katahdin Staples mustered up a vintage performance on Saturday.

The sophomore from Bettye Davis East High won the Division I boys title at the Alaska State Cross Country Championships, earning the first title for a Thunderbirds boys runner since Don Clary in 1974. Clary, a legend on the track and trail, became the first Alaskan to compete in track and field at the Olympics.

Staples finished in a time of 16 minutes, 30 seconds, and was mobbed by excited East classmates in the minutes after crossing the finish line at Bartlett High.

“To even like, walk a little bit in Don Clary’s footsteps is just amazing,” Staples said. “That’s why I wore the vintage East jersey, because it’s the first time in 50 years that an East person has won state. I’m just so happy. It was such a good race.”

Staples was a week removed from winning the Region IV title at Kincaid Park. But on a different course against a different field of runners, he had a new plan.

“My strategy played out pretty well,” Staples said. “I wanted to just kind of stick with (the lead pack) and see what they would do. Then at around 2.5K, maybe even a little less, I just wanted to build up some distance. So I passed the lead person and I tried to build up a little bit of a gap. And my strategy was just to hold that. And it worked out.”

Staples was aware of the five-decade gap since a Thunderbirds boys runner had won state and said that provided added pressure.

“I was very stressed for it,” he said. “So many people on my team really wanted me to succeed. I wanted me to succeed and to be mentioned with the name Don Clary, it made me nervous. But coming out here, it all worked out. And as soon as it started, all the nerves went away.”

Staples, who turned 16 on Friday, had more modest goals entering the season. He hadn’t competed at state as a freshman but continued to turn in podium performances as the season went on.

“Katahdin is a dream athlete to work with,” East coach Christina Shurtleff said. “You really couldn’t ask for a better kid. He was laser-focused on making state, and that was actually his original goal, was to make state. So for him to come out here and to win is just incredible for him. He looks at it as an honor, which is what makes him such a great kid.”

On the team side in Division I, the Chugiak girls team continued its domination, cruising to a fourth straight state title. But on Saturday, they were joined by the Chugiak boys, who also earned a state championship.

Alliyah Fields, Hannah Bodkin and Hannah Shaha finished fifth, sixth and seventh to pace the Chugiak girls team. On the boys side, the Mustangs got top 10 finishes from David Penfield (fifth) and Thomas Ringsmuth (eighth).

Despite the success, Chugiak coach Brian Kruchoski said focusing on the next challenge has helped the team continue to succeed year after year.

“What we’re training for is not what’s happened in the past,” he said. “We’re training for what’s going to happen in the future. And so I’m proud of them, and it’s great that they’ve done that. And now, the training is for now. There’s different teams from different places, doing different things, so you take it as it is right now.”

Individually, Wasilla’s Hailee Giacobbe won the girls race in a time of 19:04.5. After a fourth-place finish last season, the sophomore took a measured approach to the race.

“I didn’t want to go out too strong in this course,” she said. “It’s quite hilly and if you go out too strong, you’re definitely going to burn out. So I knew for a fact, the second lap, I wanted to kick it.”

At the Division II level, it was a day for repeat champions, both in the individual and team competitions.

At the team level, Seward won the girls title again, finishing just two points ahead of Sitka with 44 points. But for the second straight year, the Sitka duo of Clare Mullin (19:47.6) and Marina Dill (19:55.7) finished 1-2 individually.

“I knew I was the favorite coming into this race, and I was kind of worked up a little bit before the race,” said Mullin, who is headed to compete collegiately in track and cross country at Gonzaga University. “But then I got to the line and I was like, ‘I know how to do this. I’ve been here before.’ It was just really good to be able to run with my teammate and I’m really happy. I think it was a great end to my senior season.”

The boys race in Division II may have also given fans and spectators a feeling of deja vu. Like in 2023, Grace Christian’s Robbie Annett captured the top spot. Annett’s time of 16:14.8 was seven seconds faster than his teammate Colton Merriner, who placed second.

That 1-2 finish vaulted the Grizzlies to another state title as a team. Annett said the Bartlett course was difficult but he was happy with the finish. He planned to go out fast in the first 1K and maintain the lead, a strategy he worked to perfection.

“I knew where the hard parts were going to be, so I kind of tried to press those whenever I could,” he said. “The conditions were beautiful today, so the course wasn’t muddy at all. I chose no spikes, which I think was a good option to help me a lot on the flats.”

Another repeat winner came in the Division III ranks. Unalakleet’s Ourea Busk won in 2023 as a freshman, and as a sophomore, she earned a second title. Busk led wire to wire and said she felt a little pressure coming in as defending champion but used positive thinking to put together a good race.

“Just encouraging thoughts, like ‘You can do this, you need to push,’” she said.

Craig’s Aulis Nelson said he had instructions from his coach to visualize his race. That strategy worked as he ran to a Division III boys state title in a time of 17:22.7.

“I did a lot of that,” Nelson said. “I came here this morning and ran the course. I came here yesterday and Thursday and also ran the course because we got here early. And I was just kind of thinking about this moment and the possibility that I could maybe take home the state championship for Craig. And it made me feel really honored. And I was like, ‘I’m gonna give it my all and see if it happens.’ And it did.”

The Division III boys team competition was as competitive as any on the day. Petersburg won the crown with just 10 points, followed closely by Glennallen with 13. Petersburg landed three runners in the top 10 and Glennallen had three in the top 12.

Petersburg also won the girls title with a team score of 16.
