Chugiak, Colony and Grace Christian among big winners at Alaska state cross-country championships

Campbell Peterson has been a competitive force this cross-country season. But just as importantly, the Chugiak senior has also been an uplifting force.

Peterson cruised to a Division I girls title in the Alaska State Cross-Country Championships on Saturday at Bartlett High in a time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds.

But throughout the season, she replicated the gestures she was on the receiving end of as a young runner, sticking close to the finish line to congratulate and assist fellow runners as they crossed.

“Especially like the seniors when I was a freshmen that were there giving hugs and encouraging, just wanting making people want to come back and want to run and making people feel good about themselves instead of just ‘Oh man another like painful race,’ ” she said. “So I just wanted to put that forward and let everyone know that we love everyone who’s out here running.”

Peterson’s win also paced Chugiak as the Mustangs ran to a second consecutive state title with 42 points, outpacing runner-up Juneau-Douglas.

The team win was the culmination of the last 12 months of training for Peterson, who was the individual runner-up last year.

“I’m really proud of our girls,” Peterson said. “I’m really proud of how we’ve all come together and really bonded this last week, especially because it’s just been us at practice.”

While the girls result was a repeat, the Division I boys result was a bit of a surprise, but no less of a dominant effort.

Much like Peterson, Colony’s Matthew Rongitsch broke away from the pack to win convincingly. But his time of 16:13 was followed directly by teammates Zac Cheyette (16:29) and Tobias Buchanan (16:39) for a 1-2-3 Colony finish.

“I was not expecting that,” Rongitsch said. “We were hoping to get a couple on the top 10. We blew that out of the water for sure.”

That sweep of the medal stand helped Colony finish with 43 points, outpacing runner-up South Anchorage.

At the Division II level, Grace Christian got a repeat individual winner in David Sliwinski to narrowly edge Sitka for the team title.

Sliwinski ran the fastest time of the day on the 5K track that slithered through the sometimes-muddy trails around Bartlett High.

His time of 15:55 barely edged out Seamus McDonough of Homer. The two runners had gone back and forth all season, with Sliwinski getting the last word.

McDonough had caught Sliwinski on Separation Hill, but it wasn’t long before the Grace Christian runner regained the lead and held off the Homer runner for the title.

“He eventually did get me in that hill, but I just rehearsed what I knew and eventually I took advantage of the downhill and I got a little distance from him,” Sliwinski said.

Grace Christian, which placed five runners in the top 20, finished with 47 points. Runner-up Sitka had four runners in the top 10 and finished with 49 points.

The girls Division II race was a portrait of resilience and teamwork, according to head coach Shasta Smith. A year ago, Sitka runners Anna Prussian and Claire Mullin ended up in the medical tents after collapsing at the finish line.

This year Prussian, a senior, and Mullin, a sophomore, finished 1-2 with just a second separating them.

“For them to pull it together and finish the way they did today,” they ran smart, ran together and ran for each other,” Smith said. “We talk a lot about that — do it for each other, like push each other. Don’t use each other as a reason to slow down. Do what you need to get the best out of your teammates.”

It’s a strategy that both racers embraced.

“It’s really nice racing with her and training with her,” Prussian said of Mullin. ”It just gives me someone to push me every single time we’re together. And it’s really nice having that like team connection in the race.”

While the Sitka runners had teammates to push them, the Division III girls winner didn’t have any teammates, period.

Taylor Eddington ran alone this year for Tri-Valley School in Healy. Nonetheless, the freshman broke away to win the Division III race in a time of 20:29.

“It’s been good but it’s hard to motivate myself,” she said. “It’s hard to find a good pace. I know my race pace but I have to gauge myself against other people (and it’s) hard to do (with no teammates).”

On the team side in Division III, Haines took the girls title. In Division II, it was Seward that used a balanced finish to win the team event.

The boys Division III race was a Wrangell rally as the team had five runners in the top 10 led by Daniel Harrison, who won the race at 17:30.

“It’s super fun,” Harrison said. “I love these guys. Last year was a little bit rough for us but this year we got a new new assistant coach, Mason Villarma. He ran at Gonzaga and so he got us trained really well. We just hammered it out. It turned out great for us. We have a really strong crew and it’s tons of fun with these guys.”

Bryce Gerald is coaching at Nenana this season, but was a 2016 graduate of Wrangell and was happy to see the kids who were elementary students when he was in high school find success.

“My mom was a librarian,” he said. “And so she just loves these kids and now seeing them running today, man, I’m just so proud of them. They did great.”
