South Wolverines survive in five sets against West Eagles volleyball team

Hannah Henrie’s 23 kills and 12 digs powered the South Wolverines past the West Eagles in a five-set Cook Inlet Conference volleyball match Tuesday night at West High.

Tracy Rasavong handed out 15 assists and made five kills to help South take a 25-22, 25-18, 14-25, 15-25, 15-12 decision. Elizabeth Johnson added 21 digs, and Maddie Jagels had 12 digs and three kills.

The Eagles lost the first two sets but rallied to take the next two, getting 14 kills and three aces from Elizabeth Hoak along the way. Salvation Elia and Xainalyn Paul each had seven kills, and double-digit digs came from Hazel Allen (22) and Malia Iloilo (10). Matagi Maugaotega ran the offense with 39 assists.

In Tuesday’s other matches, Service beat Chugiak in four sets and Dimond and Bartlett each picked up sweeps.

Service took down Chugiak 25-13, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21 behind a balanced team effort featuring Collette Carpenter (9 kills, 7 digs), Anna Fenn (8 kills, 6 digs), Jordan Hayes (6 kills), Autumn Kirkpatrick (18 digs, 4 aces) and setters Ashley Hayes and Camryn Stevens (16 assists apiece, plus six kills for Hayes).

Chugiak got a boost from Aubre Adams (13 kills), Hayden Inman (8 kills), Lily Hulse (18 assists, 12 digs), Abigail Klein (11 digs) and Abigail Mason (4 aces).

In Bartlett’s 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 sweep of Eagle River, the Golden Bears were led by Ilikea Kahunanui (8 kills, 2 solo blocks), Dora Roberts (10 kills, 2 solo blocks), Kalynn Fainuulelei (2 kills, 2 solo blocks) and Sinalynn Roberts (22 assists, 6 aces).

Dimond dispatched East 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 despite an East effort that included nine kills from Avery Northcutt and six from Makaya Singleton.
