Reigning champion Dimond opens flag football season with a pair of victories

The Dimond Lynx flag football team, which last season won its eighth Cook Inlet Conference championship, is 2-0 after the first week of this season.

The Lynx shut out East 19-0 Saturday for their second win over the season in a game that started with sophomore Mai Mateaki’s pick-six. Mateaki intercepted a pass and took it 50 yards to spot Dimnd to an early lead.

Mateaki also rushed for two touchdowns and 53 yards on nine carries. Contributing to the shutout were Xiomara Chavez (4 pulls, one for a loss), Maile Wilcox (3 pulls, 1 interception) and Tatum Porter (1 interception).

Mateaki also provided a spark in Dimond’s 12-6 win over Service on Thursday. She rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries and supplied six pulls and an interception. Chavez added eight pulls and Wilcox had five pulls and an interception.

Kali Hibbert had a hand in both touchdowns, tossing a 2-yard scoring pass to Ellie Cunningham in the first half and rushing 4 yards for a second-half touchdown.

Service avoided the shutout by scoring with less than a minute remaining on Gigi Mahe’s touchdown pass to Natalie Chananto.

Service bounced back Saturday to take a 7-6 win over South. South had a chance to win it in the final minute, but its attempt at a two-point conversion came up short.

Zoe Whittier gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead late in the first half when she scored on a 45-yard catch-and-run play set up with Greta Helseson’s pass. Neena Brubaker scored the one-point conversion, which proved to be the winning point.

Service was 40 seconds away from a shutout when South quarterback Olivia Heartwell connected with Georgia Lantz for a 60-yard touchdown. The Wolverines went for the win but their conversion attempt failed.

On Thursday, Heartwell threw touchdowns to Emily McCutcheon and Madison McDonald in a 12-0 triumph over East.
