After a rainy start, Anchorage high school tennis teams are in full swing

Service Cougars tennis player Ulysses Escobar racked up a straight-set victory for the third time this week Wednesday in a Cook Inlet Conference meet at Service High.

Escobar beat South’s Jack Perkins 6-2, 6-2 in boys singles, adding the win to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chugiak’s Robert Wanek on Tuesday and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Eagle River’s Charlie Wallace on Monday.

In Wednesday’s meet, South won three of the five doubles matches to take a 5-4 victory over Service.

This is the second week of the CIC season, which got off to a soggy start last week when the first meet of the season was postponed by rain. But it’s been smooth sailing this week, if you don’t mind a bit of wind.

Players enjoyed good weather for Wednesday’s meets at Chugiak and Service, as they did for Tuesday matches at Chugiak and Bartlett.

Monday’s weather was less hospitable, although West breezed to victory on a day when wind impacted meets on opposite sides of town.

“West and Chugiak had a challenging day in the wind at West,” Eagles coach Bill Cotton said in an email after his team’s 8-1 win over Chugiak.

At the day’s other meet, “the only thing faster than the wind was the players’ racquets as they battled it out ... in extremely windy conditions on the Hillside,” said Service coach Dan Lochner, whose team pulled out a 5-4 victory over Eagle River.

Teams will continue to play dual meets outdoors for about three more weeks. They move indoors to the Alaska Club East on Sept. 13.

The season wraps up in early October with the CIC championships Oct. 1-2 and the state championships Oct. 7-9. Both of those meets are scheduled to be held at The Alaska Club East.
