Lumen Christi is sending both of its basketball teams to the state tournament after a dramatic sweep of the Class 1A Peninsula Conference titles Friday night in Soldotna.
The girls started the night off with a 51-20 rout of Cook Inlet Academy. Tournament MVP Emily Ross poured in 18 points and teammates Natalie Grubba and Amara Warren scored 11 apiece.
The boys followed with a 72-71 overtime win over Ninilchik, winning it with a 3-pointer by Brenden Gregory as time ran out.
Ninilchik appeared to win with a last-second shot that made it 71-69, but Lumen Christi players called for a time out right after the shot and officials put .5 of a second back on the clock — just enough time to make a difference.
A long inbounds pass made its way to Brenden Gregory, who drained a 3-pointer to lift the Archangels. Gregory finished with 21 points and Tim Bennett had 23.
