Colony, Glennallen hold narrow leads at state wrestling championships

Last year’s runners-up are making a run at winning it all this year at the state high school wrestling championships.

After one day of competition at the Alaska Airlines Center, Colony and Glennallen own narrow leads in the Division I and Division II team standings.

In Division I, Colony is clinging to a 4.5-point lead over defending champion South. A year ago, South beat the Knights by 23.5 points.

South advanced seven wrestlers to Saturday’s finals, and Colony advanced four. The rivals will square off in two weight classes — 135 pounds (Colony’s Jared Hopkins vs. South’s Niko Mayo) and 140 pounds (Colony’s Aidan Ehmann vs. South’s Theo Cha).

In Division II, Glennallen has a nine-point cushion over Bethel. The Panthers finished second a year ago to Homer.

In the girls division, North Pole — which finished sixth last season — leads Lathrop by 17 points.

Five of the tournament’s top seeds lost in Friday’s semifinal round -- Colony’s Elijah Larsen (112 pounds) and Thunder Mountain’s Camden Erickson (215) in Division I; Dillingham’s Demetery Hoseth (119) and Redington’s Charles Severance (135) in Division II, and Lathrop’s Desarae Matheny (145) in the girls division.

Competition resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday. Championship finals are slated for 5 p.m., with action happening on three mats at the same time.
