Winning streaks are back in the news this week in Alaska high school football.
A week after Soldotna's state-record 59-game winning streak ended, Barrow's more modest seven-game wining streak ended Saturday in Eagle River, where the Wolves pounded the Whalers 50-3.
With the Barrow loss, the Bartlett Golden Bears boast Alaska's longest current streak, which they stretched to seven with Friday's 60-27 victory over South. Bartlett won its final five games last season en route to the Division I state championship and is 2-0 this season.
Lopsided games were the norm during Week 2. Six teams scored 50 or more points to bury their opponents, including Soldotna, which got back in the win column Friday by roughing up North Pole 66-19.
Eagle River on Saturday posted its second consecutive blowout victory by limiting Barrow to a second-quarter field goal. Ryan Adkins threw four touchdown passes, two of them to Quanard Cox.
Last week, Eagle River drubbed Houston 42-12. Eagle River is a Division II team that opens conference play next week against Kodiak; Houston and Barrow are both Division III teams.
Other teams racking up 50 points or more to post big wins were West (55-9 over Juneau), Lathrop (53-16 over Dimond) and Kenai Central (58-6 over Homer).
