Tobin Karlberg honored as Alaska’s top prep basketball player

Tobin Karlberg of Grace Christian is the Gatorade Player of the Year for Alaska high school boys basketball.

Karlberg, a 6-foot senior guard, averaged 20.1 points, 4.3 steals and 3.9 assists through his first 25 games this season.

He was Alaska's Class 3A player of the year last season and is a two-time, first-team all-state selection.

He's the first player from the Class 3A Anchorage school to win the award, given annually to player deemed the best in Alaska.

"Tobin Karlberg is one of those rare athletes who is a true coach on the floor," Archie Young, the head coach at Mt. Edgecumbe, said in a press release announcing Karlberg's selection. "He's one of the best I've seen at making his teammates better and he never shows frustration. I think he's one of the best leaders Alaska has had in some time."

Karlberg, who owns a 3.3 grade-point average, has signed a letter of intent to play at UAA.
