The seven-year streak of state championships ended Saturday for the Dimond High boys swim team, but the Lynx still made their mark.
Make that two marks.
The relay team of sophomore Maximus Addington, junior Reed Dittlinger and seniors Nathan Alfano and Chris Chung broke two long-standing state records on the final day of competition at Juneau's Dimond Park Aquatic Center.
On both occasions, they erased records set in 1998 by a different generation of Dimond swimmers.
The relay records were among five set on Saturday.
Sparked by two state-record performances by Talon Lindquist, the Kodiak boys dethroned Dimond to claim their first team title.
Kodiak won with 105 points to Dimond's 86. The battle for third place was decided by a single point. Thunder Mountain edged Soldotna, 62-61.
In the girls competition, Dimond scored 95 points to win a second straight crown. The Lynx held off Juneau, which was second with 82.5 points. Third place went to Sitka with 68.5 points.
Five state records tumbled Saturday, including the oldest mark in the record book.
Brayden Schachle of Wasilla won his third straight diving championship with an effort that shattered the record set in 1982.
He totaled 539.35 points – more than 100 more than runnerup Ethan Larson of Bartlett – to shatter the 34-year-old record of 517.25 set by Chugiak's Alvin Spencer.
Dimond's relay records came by narrow margins.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Addinton, Dittlinger, Alfano and Chung combined for a time of 1 minute, 26.31. That shaved .25 off the old mark of 1:26.56.
In the 400 free relay, they swam to a time of 3:09.05, clipping .65 off the old mark of 3:09.70.
Lindquist accounted for the meet's other records – and in one instance, he broke his own record.
Lindquist became the first swimmer to break the 50-second mark in the 100-yard backstroke at the state meet. He finished in 49.50 to break the record of 51.23 he set in 2013. Dittlinger finished second in 51.73.
In the 200 free, Lindquist became the first to crack the 1:40.00 mark at the state meet. His time of 1:39.78 replaced the 2008 record of 1:40.58 set by Juneau's Cody Brunette.
Lindquist was one of six swimmers to win two individual championships.
Caleb Law of Service won the boys 50 free and 100 free, Izzy Powers of Chugiak won the girls 50 free and 100 free, Jessica Davis of Sitka won the girls 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Mia Ruffin of Juneau won the girls 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and Bergen David of Thunder Mountain won the boys 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
