The Rewind: West football earns playoff win, Wasilla basketball star Layla Hays commits to Iowa and Wolverines debut at Sullivan

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. This past week of high school football action saw one thriller and three blowouts at the Division I level, an upset in Division III and championships claimed in flag and 9-man football. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Fairbanks had a star endurance runner honored. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

In the most competitive game of the opening round of the Division I high school football playoffs, reigning state champion West pulled off another dramatic win over Juneau-Douglas that went down to the wire. After just missing each other deep throughout the game, quarterback Jethro DeCastro delivered a dime in the back of the end zone to fellow senior and leading wide receiver,Ariel Sanchez for a 33-yard touchdown on fourth and long to break a 13-13 stalemate and put the Eagles up by seven points with 64 seconds left in the game after a successful extra-point attempt.

“I just knew that corner couldn’t keep up with me and I was just gone,” Sanchez said. “Once I saw the play call, I was like ‘I’m gone, it’s me.’ ”

West trailed 13-6 at halftime but scored 14 unanswered on offense and shut out Juneau-Douglas on defense in the second half to secure the come-from-behind victory and advance back to the semifinals. The Eagles forced four turnovers after halftime, including a game-sealing interception to slam the door on the Huskies’ last-ditch effort to tie the game.

“They’ve been amazing and really carried us when our offense is just putting stuff together,” West head coach Tim Davis said. “For them to do what they did tonight, that situation, was pretty impressive to just give the offense a chance after all the penalties and turnovers we committed.”

For the first in half a decade, a team other than Dimond finished on top of the Cook Inlet Conference in flag football after South pulled away from West in Thursday’s championship game 27-6. The Wolverines were propelled to a 10th-straight victory and beat the Eagles for the third time this season thanks to a hat trick from junior quarterback Jillian Preston, who threw a trio of passing touchdowns. South also got a defensive score from Lexi Luff on an interception return.

The 2024 high school tennis season wrapped up over the weekend at the Alaska Club East and a handful of milestones were crossed off, including one that made history. West High was able to claim a sixth consecutive team title and 12th overall, despite not having a single player or pairing crowned champion. However, one of the most compelling stories was that of Service senior Ulysses Escobar who avenged his semifinal loss from last year by claiming his first state title in three trips.

“There have been moments where I thought it was really important, especially sophomore and junior year,” he said. “After that, you realize that there are so many more endeavors that you can do to improve your game for next time and that’s what we’ve been doing every season.”

In the boy’s double division, twin brothers Jakan Reinheller and Logan Reinheller of West Valley also accomplished a long-awaited goal by going out on top in boys doubles as seniors after coming up short in gut-wrenching fashion as juniors last year.

“Last year we had kind of a heart-breaker but I think it was a good thing,” Jakan said. “I think it kept us humble and kept us hungry.”

For the first time in state tennis tournament history, a champion was crowned from Region III after Colony’s Jan Chongkavinit, a foreign exchange student from Thailand, upset defending girls singles state champion Lana Cebrian of West.

“It’s huge for Region III as a whole,” Colony head coach Susan Brunner said. “(The region) has had a big showing here at the state tournament where our kids have gone pretty far overall but to have someone go to first place is so huge.”

UAF’s Kendall Kramer earned her third Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Player of the Week honor of the season after placing second in a field of 334 endurance runners at the Lewis Crossover this past week. The reigning GNAC and NCAA West Region champion posted a time of 20:54.4 which only trailed Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge of Colorado Mines. Kramer’s efforts helped lead the Nanooks to a fifth-place finish, the highest of any school from the conference.

“We knew that there were going to be phenomenal athletes competing at Lewis, so it was important for Kendall to be patient and trust her instincts,” UAF assistant coach Conrad Haber said in a statement. “I think she did a great job of executing her race in what was a large field comprised of incredibly talented athletes.”

The UAA volleyball team split a pair of home matches at the Alaska Airlines Center this past week with a four-set win over Northwest Nazarene on Thursday and a four-set loss to Central Washington on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Katie Birtcil led the team in kills over the weekend with 20 combined kills and senior outside hitter Bethany Tuchardt added 19.

“Our team did a great job of making the necessary adjustments after the first set and we were able to disrupt their offensive timing after that,” UAA head coach Stacie Meisner said after Thursday’s win. “Our setters did a great job of spreading the ball around to our hitters, and Bethany really stepped up with some huge kills in that final set.”

The UAA hockey team got swept on the road in a two-game series with Miami of Ohio over the weekend. While the first game on Friday was decided by a single goal 3-2 after falling short of completing a rally, the second was much more lopsided. The Seawolves fell into a 4-0 hole through the first two periods before they got on the board with their lone score in the third.

“Thought we had solid road first period, but our penalty kill let us down again,” UAA head coach Matt Shasby said in a statement on Thursday. “A lot of learning going on with so many new faces.”

The Anchorage Wolverines returned to Alaska after opening the season on the road and established a winning streak after sweeping in-state rival Kenai River in a two-game series over the weekend. The first game took place in town on their new home ice at Sullivan Arena and they treated a crowd of nearly 4,000 people to an electric 3-2 victory on Friday night and went on the road down to Soldotna on Saturday and came away with a 5-3 win. Anchorage had seven players score over the weekend and were led by forward Daniel Bagnole who scored one in each game.

“It’s been a long time coming, a lot of anticipation, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes that I don’t touch any of it,” Wolverines head coach Nick Walters said. “To see the community come out and support these guys, it was an awesome first night, so we just have to keep doing our job to keep them wanting to come back.”

Alaska stars shining Outside

Wasilla’s Layla Hays is in the midst of her senior volleyball season for the Wasilla Warriors who are on a mission to successfully defend their 4A state title. But that didn’t stop her from making a big decision about her future over the weekend. The 6-foot-4 powerful post presence and four-star recruit announced her commitment to continue her basketball career after high school at Division I powerhouse Iowa University during her official visit this past Saturday. According to Kyle Huesmann of Hawkeye Report, Hays chose the Hawkeyes over Indiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Duke, Gonzaga and Washington where her former prep rival Sayvia Sellers is gearing up for her sophomore season.

Anchorage’s Jeremy Swayman helped the Boston Bruins secure back-to-back victories this past week as the starting goalkeeper, including making 20-of-24 saves against the Montreal Canadiens in a 6-4 win on Thursday and 33-of-34 saves in a 2-1 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Anchorage’s Niko Alailefaleula recorded a season-high 37 rushing yards in the Southern Utah University football team’s 42-21 victory over Eastern Kentucky University. The former Bartlett star recorded all but one of his yards on a career- and game-high 36 yard carry that he ripped off in the first quarter which earned him title of Firehouse Subs Sub of the Game honors.

Anchorage’s Jayden Heartwell helped lead the Dickinson State University football team to a 38-21 victory over Dakota State University on Saturday. The former South High standout defensive back earned North Star Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week after recording a season-high six total tackles and a pair of interceptions, one of which he returned for a 26-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Blue Hawks a two-score lead.

Anchorage’s Thomas Witte recorded a season-high four total tackles including a solo takedown in the University of Nevada-Reno football team’s 42-37 victory over Oregon State University this past Saturday.

Anchorage’s Brooke Dexter had her streak of consecutive matches with double-digit kills snapped in the Simon Fraser University women’s volleyball team’s third straight win Thursday over Montana Billings State University. However, the former West High standout bounced back by recording a season- and match-high 23 kills and 25 total points two days later in a win over the Red Leafs four-set win over Seattle Pacific University.

Anchorage’s Marisol Vargas recorded her fourth shutout win of the season as the goalkeeper of the University of St. Mary (Kansas) women’s soccer team in the Spires’ 8-0 victory over Bethany College (Kansas) this past Saturday.

West at East, Saturday at 2 p.m.

The first game to kick off in town on semifinal Saturday will be a regular season rematch between a pair of crosstown rivals. The defending Division I state champion Eagles will be looking to extend their winning streak and exact revenge on the Thunderbirds who rallied from two scores down to hand West its lone home loss of the season 36-29 in Week 2.

Bartlett at Dimond, Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

In the game of the day, the Golden Bears will also be make a trek across town with hopes of avenging their season-opening loss by spoiling the hopes of completing a perfect season by the Lynx. In Week 1, Dimond’s conditioning and star quarterback, Cayden Pili, proved to be the difference in a 35-30 thriller.

ASAA Division III state championship at Wasilla High School, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The 2024 season at the Division III level will come to a close Saturday afternoon in the Mat-Su when defending state champion Kenai Central takes on Homer, which is just a year removed from winning a title in 2022. The Kardinals swept the Mariners during the regular season, outscoring them by a combined 60-8 including a 21-0 shutout in the season-opener and a 39-8 blowout earlier this month.

ASAA state championships at Wasilla High School, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

The first state tournament for the sport will take place out in the Mat-Su Valley with the championship game taking place on Saturday evening at 4:30 p.m. Quarterfinals will begin Thursday at 3 p.m. and the last game will be played at 7:30 p.m. and Friday’s semifinals will start at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Wasilla at Dimond, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The top two teams in the state will square of for the fifth time this season but the first in a regular season match in what could wind up being a potential Division I state preview. The Lynx have been the only in-state team to beat the defending state champion Warriors in tournament play and neither has lost a regular season match to date which will change after this highly anticipated nonconference clash of titans.
