The Rewind: Lathrop upsets Soldotna football team; top-ranked Denver hockey sweeps UAA

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. The final week of the high school football regular season at the Division I level saw a powerhouse finish undefeated while a Division II power suffered its first loss in more than two years. Meanwhile, the cross-country season came to a close and saw both new and repeat champions crowned. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks volleyball teams went undefeated on the road while Seawolves hockey officially opened its regular season with the toughest test imaginable. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

Despite claiming the Cook Inlet Conference a week earlier, the Dimond High football team was determined to finish the regular season with an unblemished overall record and accomplished that mission with a dominant 31-14 win over Service. It marked the Lynx’s first win over the Cougars since the 2015 season.

“This means a lot for the team but thankfully, they all seem to understand that the job isn’t done,” Dimond head coach Brian Yim said in a statement. “The seniors on this team were freshmen when we went 0-8. A lot of players on this team have siblings or friends that played for Dimond during the rough seasons. As happy as we all are to have gone 8-0, the goal this week is 1-0. We are playing a Colony team that has played everyone tough this year and has broken my heart as a coach a few times in the past. It’s a whole new season, and we need to treat it as such. Everyone is pretty banged up in the conference, and we are no exception.”

Elsewhere in Division I action, Juneau-Douglas got five touchdowns and nearly 300 rushing yards from wide receiver-turned-quarterback Jayden Johnson in a blowout win over Colony on Friday night to keep the Knights winless heading into the postseason. On Saturday, West got another rushing touchdown hat trick from stud senior power back Zephaniah Sailele and held on for a 28-20 victory over Bartlett, which tried mounting a furious comeback in the second half.

The biggest upset of the season took place at the Division II level on Saturday evening when Lathrop spoiled rival Soldotna’s opportunity to finish a second straight regular season undefeated with a stunning 35-28 road victory. It marked the Stars first loss since the 2022 state championship game when the Malamutes prevented them from finishing that season 10-0 by handing them a 21-18 defeat.

“We have a lot of respect for Soldotna football, going all the way back to Bob Boudreaux days,” Lathrop head coach Luke Balash said in a statement. “We recognize the significance of winning a game at Soldotna. West Anchorage did that last in 2018. Before that it was Palmer in 2012. Four weeks ago, a lot of folks wanted to throw dirt on us, but we kept believing we’re a good football team with championship level talent. It all came together for us and we got a few lucky bounces too. We hope to put in another great week of preparation this week and win a rivalry game against West Valley. And if things can shake out for us we hope to see Soldotna again this season, preferably in Anchorage because it is a long, expensive trip to get to Soldotna.”

The 2024 high school cross-country season came to a close Saturday, and while there were a handful of repeat champions at the Division II and III levels with Unalakleet’s Ourea Busk, Sitka’s Clare Mullin and Grace Christian’s Robbie Annett successfully defending titles, that wasn’t the case in Division I. On the girls side, Wasilla’s Hailee Giacobbe finished first after coming in fourth last season as a sophomore. In the boys race, Bettye Davis East High’s Katahdin Staples became the first male Thunderbird to win a state title in the sport since Alaska Olympic legend Don Clary in 1974.

“To even, like, walk a little bit in Don Clary’s footsteps is just amazing,” Staples said. “That’s why I wore the vintage East jersey, because it’s the first time in 50 years that an East person has won state. I’m just so happy. It was such a good race.”

On the college scene, the UAA and UAF volleyball teams went 2-0 on the road last week. The Seawolves swept Montana State Billings on Thursday and took care of business against Seattle Pacific in four sets on Saturday and were led in kills over the two matches by senior hitters Bethany Tuchardt and Katie Birtcil, who tied with 20 a piece.

“There were a lot of momentum swings in that match, and we were able to compose ourselves and respond after a couple of their late runs,” UAA head coach Stacie Meisner said in a statement. “Our defense was also fantastic at extending some rallies with hustle plays and taking advantage of those extra opportunities.”

Meanwhile, the Nanooks swept both the Yellowjackets and the Falcons in straight sets and were led in kills in the two matches combined by junior right side hitter Elena Guc with 19.

The UAA hockey team opened the regular season against top-ranked and reigning Division I national champion Denver University, which is coached by Anchorage’s David Carle. On Friday night, the Seawolves’ special teams struggles cost them a chance at pulling off an upset in the first of the two-game series in a 6-2 defeat.

“The crowd was great and once again our fan base showed up to see us compete and at the end of the day, we took too many penalties against the No. 1 team in the country and you’re not going to be able to win doing that,” UAA head coach Matt Shasby said. “Overall, it was a great environment and great first game of the year for everybody and a lot for us to learn from.”

The Seawolves played the Pioneers a little tighter on Sunday night but still fell 4-1 with their lone goals of the weekend coming from Anchorage local Aiden Westin, sophomore defenseman Joey Potter and freshman forward Dimitry Kebreau.

“Denver laid off the gas a little bit in the third and just kind of allowed the clock to tick down, but I was proud of our guys to continue to push through to the end, and I’m happy for Joey Potter to get his first collegiate goal,” Shasby said.

The Anchorage Wolverines split the final two games of their road trip to open the season with a 4-1 loss to the Wisconsin Windigo on Friday night and then bounced back Saturday with a 6-0 shutout of the Chippewa Steel. The team had five players record goals and were led by Anchorage local product Toby Carlson with three, including the lone score in their loss. Forward Cole Christian scored twice in the second game.

Alaska stars shining Outside

After making his regular-season debut as pro despite being on the active roster all of last year as a rookie, Palmer’s Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu was active for the second straight game for the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season. The 2023 sixth-rounder out of Oregon also saw his first action of the year in the team’s thrilling 41-38 overtime victory over Cincinnati on Sunday with all seven of his snaps coming on special teams as a member of the blocking unit on extra points and field goals.

Anchorage’s Jeremy Swayman became the fifth-highest paid goalie in the National Hockey League after agreeing to an eight-year contract extension worth $66 million to remain with the Boston Bruins through the 2031 season. Last season the Alaskan broke out in a big way by establishing himself as one of the best goaltenders in the league after making 43 starts in the regular season with a goals-against average of 2.53 before securing the full-time starting spot in the postseason.

Anchorage’s Anna Dalton used a strong second half to win the USATF Trail Marathon Championship in Wisconsin last weekend with a time of 3 hours, 24 minutes, 2 seconds. After only leading runner-up Gracia Sich of Saint Paul, Minn., by 8 seconds after the first of two laps, Dalton pulled away to win by more than 14 minutes.

Anchorage’s Brooke Dexter has recorded double-digit kills in 12-straight matches to open the season for the Simon Fraser University women’s volleyball team after propelling the Red Leafs past Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s University last week. Against the Saints on Saturday, the former West High standout recorded single-match season highs with 21 total points and three aces and logged a season-high five total blocks two days earlier in a win over the Wolves on Thursday.

Anchorage’s Jayden Heartwell helped lead the Dickinson State University football team to a 19-6 victory over Valley City State University on Saturday. The former South standout defensive back led the charge for the Blue Hawks defense by tying for the second-most solo tackles with four, and he recorded his second interception of the season when he picked off fellow Alaskan Noah Chambers of Juneau, who started the game at quarterback for the Vikings. Players from the Last Frontier who made plays for Valley City in the game included linebacker Loke Iese and defensive lineman Georgie Mageo, who hail from Anchorage and combined to record 15 total tackles, including four for a loss and a sack.

Anchorage’s Deuce Zimmerman finished with the second-most receptions and receiving yards for Western New Mexico University in the Mustangs’ 34-10 loss to Western Oregon University this past Saturday. The former East High standout recorded single-game season highs with five catches for 63 yards, including a long reception of 27 to bring his totals on the season to 12 receptions for 178 yards in five games.
