The Rewind: South flag football shuts out West, Dimond football keeps rolling; UAA volleyball extends win streak

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school, collegiate levels and professional levels. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football saw more dominant performances, stunning results and wild finishes. Meanwhile, several other fall sports had major meets and big matchups take place in town. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks cross-country and volleyball teams had strong showings. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

After suffering the program’s first loss this season earlier in the week to four-time defending champion Dimond in a 6-0 stunner, the South Anchorage flag football team was itching to get back on track during homecoming weekend.

After a scoreless 22 minutes to start the game, the Wolverines found the end zone three times in the final 1 minute, 54 seconds of the first half in a Cook Inlet Conference clash against West on Saturday morning. That was all the game’s scoring as South won 19-0.

“It was a really big bounce-back and just what we needed after losing to Dimond,” junior quarterback Jillian Preston said. “It gives us a boost in our confidence and proves to us that we can do it and we can do what we need to do to win it all.”

She got the scoring started by scrambling for a 5-yard touchdown at the 1:54 mark. After an interception gave South the ball back with a short field, it only took a few plays for Preston to score again on a 15-yard connection to senior Skylar Lind with 41 seconds left. West opted to punt on the final play of the second quarter but wasn’t able to stop junior Brianna Bailey from taking the ball 30 yards for a third touchdown as time expired.

“We’ve always had good wide receivers, good blockers, good defense but I feel like this year is our year,” Preston said.

While the Wolverines aren’t the first team to defeat the Eagles this season, by not letting them score in either half, they became the first to shut the Eagles out this year. West averaged 28.75 points through its first eight games.

“It’s pretty incredible and I’m super proud of the team,” South defensive coordinator Skoey Vergen said. “We have a defensive scheme that’s pretty fluid. We adjust to what we see in front of us, and the team executed really well.”

Later that afternoon, the South football team tried to pull off a similar feat in its own CIC showdown with undefeated Dimond. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, wet conditions led to a pair of high snaps sailing over the head of senior quarterback Cole Yarrington on back-to-back drives late in the second quarter. Both of those snaps were returned for touchdowns by Lynx senior defensive lineman Lamarr Heanu-Williams.

“I was always taught to fall on it, but there was nobody right next to me so I knew I had to pick it up and go for it,” he said. “I knew once we had those two touchdowns that we were going to win.”

The two scoop-and-scores gave them the breathing room they needed and thanks to another four-touchdown performance from junior star quarterback Cayden Pili, Dimond was able to cruise to a fifth-straight victory to open the season.

The most exciting volleyball match in town this past week saw Dimond and Service square off for the first time in the regular season in an epic CIC clash. The match wound up going the distance where the young visiting Lynx were able to emerge victorious over the Cougars in their first five-set match of the season.

“I was hoping it would be a good game because Service is a good team, they got a lot of players back and I was hoping that we would be able to play with them,” Dimond head coach Kim Lauwers said.

The game-winning play came on a kill from sophomore outside hitter Piper Botson who began the season in junior varsity.

In the penultimate week of the high school cross-country regular season, many of the top endurance runners from around the state descended upon Anchorage for the annual State Preview at Bartlett. In the girls varsity race, Juneau-DouglasIda Meyer (19:04) came in first place by nearly half a minute ahead of Colony’s Ella Hopkins (19:31). On the boys side, reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Robbie Annett of Grace Christian (16:21) finished 15 seconds ahead of East Anchorage’s Katahdin Staples (16:36). The Chugiak girls and South boys, both defending Division I state champions, unsurprisingly won the team titles.

On the college trails, the cross-country running teams for the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks faced off for the second time in the last two weeks at the annual Blue and Gold Meet. Leading the Seawolves’ men to a 20-38 victory was senior Zach Grams, who ran to his first career win by covering the eight-kilometer course in 25:46, which was just one second ahead of teammate junior John Peckham.

On the women’s side, the Nanooks swept the top three spots and were led to another victory by senior Rosie Fordham, who covered the six-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 59 seconds.

The UAA and UAF volleyball teams went 3-0 at the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic in Fairbanks last weekend to extend their respective winning streaks heading into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play starting this week. Both teams recorded a pair of three-set sweeps and outscored their out-of-state opponents a combined 9-1 with the hosting Nanooks being winners of eight straight while the Seawolves have now won their last four matches.

“It was a great finish to a tough preseason schedule,” UAA coach Stacie Meisner said in a statement. “We’ve made a lot of strides the last three weeks and grown as a team. We’re excited to get started and see what we can do in GNAC play.”

The Seawolves leader in kills this past weekend was junior outside hitter Tia Allen with 28 while the Nanooks were led by senior pin hitter Rilee White with 32.

Alaska stars shining Outside

Four NFL teams with an Alaskan on their 53-man roster saw action in Week 2 of the regular season last week but only one Alaska player got to see the field. Anchorage’s Brandon Pili of the Miami Dolphins played twice as many defensive snaps as he did in Week 1. Anchorage’s Tyree Wilson of the Las Vegas Raiders was out with an injury while Anchorage’s Edefuan Ulofoshio of the Buffalo Bills and Palmer’s Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu of the Baltimore Ravens were both inactive as healthy scratches.

Anchorage’s Brooke Dexter nearly led the Simon Fraser University women’s volleyball team to an upset of reigning national champion California State Los Angeles on Thursday at the Central Washington Invitational and reached a rare personal milestone in the process. The former West High standout sat at 999 career kills in 83 career matches entering the tilt. With a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs, she eclipsed the 1,000 mark as the Red Leafs fell to the Golden Eagles in five sets.

Anchorage’s Mai Mateaki scored the third goal of her freshman season for Air Force service academy’s women’s soccer team in a 4-3 loss to rival Army on Friday. The former Dimond star and 2024 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year tied the game 3-3 in the 55th minute but the Falcons would surrender the tiebreaker in the 63rd.

Anchorage’s Conner O’Farrell tied for the fourth-most total tackles on the Eastern Washington University football team in a 28-24 loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The former Service High standout recorded a season-high four total tackles, including one for a loss.

Anchorage’s Jayden Heartwell finished with the second-most total tackles in the Dickinson State University football team’s 22-20 loss to Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday. The former South High star recorded eight combined tackles, including three solos, half a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.
