Speedy sophomores sweep Big 8 cross-country races

The expectations may have been low for Service’s Miyana Kam-Magruder and Bettye Davis East’s Katahdin Staples at the Big 8 Invitational cross-country meet at Kincaid Park on Saturday.

But the results the two sophomores produced were exceptional, sweeping the top spots in the girls and boys races, respectively.

Kam-Magruder, coming off a quad injury, was running her first race of the season and had to contend with the defending state champion, Chugiak’s Hannah Shaha.

“I didn’t really expect to stay with her,” Kam-Magruder said. “She’s such a strong runner and I really look up to her since last year, when I first met her racing.”

Kam-Magruder broke a personal record and was essentially running a two-person race with Shaha when she broke away at the end of the Mize Loop.

“I didn’t really have a strategy,” she said. “I just went into and tried to stick up front.”

Chugiak finished with three runners in the top 10, while Dimond and Service had two each.

Staples had produced some good finishes this season, but breaking through with a win was a major confidence booster. Despite only being a sophomore, he has ambitions to race at the Division I level.

“To finally get the win, it’s amazing,” he said. “I never thought I’d be winning. If you’d have asked last year, my freshman self, I’d have laughed at the thought.”

On a warm and sunny day at Kincaid Park, Staples said his summer training is starting to pay off. He ran much of the race from the front, which he said required a different strategy.

“It’s a different beast,” he said. “It’s about moderating yourself and that’s a bit harder.”

Despite not having an individual land in the winner’s circle, Chugiak dominated the team competitions on both the boys and girls sides.

The girls team finished with 33 points, outpacing runner-up Dimond (60). The Mustangs boys team had 32 points, besting runner-up Service (47).

The Mustangs also swept both the JV and Open Divisions.
