The Rewind: Bartlett football bounces back, East and Dimond stay undefeated and South flag football returns victorious from Nike Kickoff Classic

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and professional levels as well as some developments on the college front. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football saw some upsets and dominant performances while several other fall sports got underway. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage men’s hockey team added a new assistant coach and preseason poll rankings were revealed for volleyball and cross country. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

The second week of the high school football season saw a handful of dominant outings by teams looking to get in the win column coming off Week 1 losses. Chief among them were the Bartlett Golden Bears, who came up short of a comeback the week prior and responded by pulling away from the South Anchorage Wolverines in the second half to secure a 32-13 victory.

“We focused on finishing the play,” Bartlett head coach Traves Ramirez-Medeiros said in a statement. “Our coaches and players responded by committing to one another and always finish. Our motto is ‘compete, elevate, finish’ and this is something we pride ourselves on. South is a very well-coached team with some dudes that can play and compete. We just had to finesse and critique our plays to be more effective in ways we can elevate. Our program thrives on competing and elevating our players to perform at a high level. I am definitely blessed to be a Golden Bear and blessed to have the community and staff support us in every way possible.”

Senior quarterback Silas Freeman got the scoring started with a 26-yard dime to wide receiver CJ Jardine for a touchdown. The two also connected on an incredible play in which Jardine pinned a contested catch against his helmet for a first down. Bartlett’s next three scores came on runs by Simeon Alailefaleula, Jerry Pulalasi and Andre Jameson.

The highlight of Week 2 was by far the heavyweight bout between crosstown rivals Bettye Davis East Anchorage and defending Division I state champion West Anchorage on Friday night. It didn’t disappoint and saw the hosting Eagles jump out to a double-digit lead in the first half and the Thunderbirds come storming back to improve to 2-0 with a 36-29 upset win.

“We tried to keep it not bigger than it was because, at the end of the day, all that we are and all that we got out of this is that we’re 2-0 in the conference,” East head coach Jeff Trotter said. “What we want is that ring at the end.”

Elsewhere on the gridiron, the only four other teams to remain unbeaten after improving to 2-0 include Dimond, West Valley, reigning Division II champion Soldotna and defending 9-man champion Seward, all of which won by double digits.

Juneau-Douglas also bounced back from a season-opening loss by blowing out visiting Service as seniors Jayden Johnson and Caleb Ziegenfuss combined for four touchdowns on offense and one on defense.

In flag football action, four-time defending Cook Inlet Conference champion Dimond suffered its first loss of the season 14-8 at the hands of Service. Last year’s CIC runner-up, South, went down to Beaverton, Oregon, for the third annual Nike Football Kickoff Classic and shut out Louisiana reigning state champion De La Salle 13-0. West stayed unbeaten and stayed unscored on by notching a pair of shutout victories in which the Eagles outscored their opponents by a combined 62-0.

Leading the way for the Wolverines in their nationally broadcasted game was junior quarterback Jillian Preston, who threw a pair of touchdowns, and on defense, senior Skylar Lind recorded two of the team’s four interceptions. For those who missed the live stream, the game will be rebroadcast Saturday on the NFL Network.

The high school volleyball season tipped off over the weekend with the annual Chugiak Invitational. Several of the best teams faced off in the two-day event and in the end, it was perennial powerhouse Dimond left standing at the top of the bracket. In the finals, the Lynx swept defending Division I state champion Wasilla 25-19, 25-23.

Out on the trails down in Soldotna at the Ted McKenney Cross Country Invitational, the state’s top runners competed against one another Saturday. In the girls varsity division, Colony’s Ella Hopkins came in first with a time of 19:15 followed by East’s Rosie Conway at 19:29. On the boys side, Grace Christian star and reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Robbie Annett crossed the finish line over half a minute ahead of Vebjorn Flagstad of South, who clocked in at 16:39.

The UAA hockey team announced the addition of veteran coach Vincent Pietrangelo as a new assistant on the staff of head coach Matt Shasby.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be adding Vinnie to our team,” Shasby said in a statement. “He brings a significant amount of experience at the collegiate level that will make us better immediately. His passion for coaching and desire to be a Seawolf was second to none during the hiring process.”

Preseason polls were released for multiple sports in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this past week and UAA had three teams crack the top five of their respective rankings. The volleyball team came in at No. 5 after receiving 59 points while the women’s cross-country team came in fifth as well with 65 points and the their male counterparts had the highest ranking of the Seawolves bunch at No. 3 with 79 points.

“This gives us our first team goal as something to beat this season,” UAA associate cross-country head coach Chas Davis said in a statement.

Alaska stars shining Outside

The NFL preseason wrapped up over the weekend and a trio of Alaskans took the field to make a case to remain on their respective teams. Anchorage’s Brandon Pili got to start and played 21 defensive snaps for the Miami Dolphins against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before leaving the game due to injury, he recorded three tackles and earned the third-highest grade on the team according to Pro Football Focus with an overall mark of 83.5. On Monday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed the former Dimond high star’s injury was not serious and he was back at practice.

Anchorage linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio stood out in the rookie’s second exhibition contest for the Buffalo Bills, a 31-26 loss to the Carolina Panthers after making his NFL debut last week. The fifth-round pick played 56 snaps on defense and 10 on special teams while finishing with seven total tackles -- third-most on the team -- a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.

Palmer’s Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu led all Baltimore Ravens offensive players in snaps played with 33, which was 63% of the team’s total in a 30-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Anchorage’s Obed Vargas continued to prove he is one of the best midfielders in Major League Soccer on Saturday when the 19-year-old recorded his seventh assist of the season to help lift the Seattle Sounders to a 3-2 win over Minnesota United. His pass to striker Jordan Morris led to the first goal of the game and took place in the 11th minute of action.

A pair of former Alaska high school football standouts made their 2024 debuts in the University of Nevada-Reno’s 29-24 loss to Southern Methodist University on Saturday. Anchorage’s Thomas Witte, a former walk-on turned starting defensive tackle, recorded a pair of tackles, including a solo takedown. On offense, Fairbanks’ Jace Henry, a tight end who transferred from Dartmouth, somersaulted into the end zone to score his first touchdown as a member of the Wolfpack on a five-yard pass.
