The Rewind: Sophomore Taurian Phillip leads Service to Southside Cup win and Kristen Faulkner continues summer to remember

Welcome back to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and professional levels as well as some developments on the college front. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football got underway and saw some impressive outings from returning and rising powers. On the college scene, athletic programs for the University of Alaska Anchorage and Fairbanks announced new additions from the recruiting trail. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

While rivalry games are usually reserved for the latter portion of the season, the battle for the Southside Cup between the Service and South Anchorage high school football teams Saturday as part of the Week 1 slate. In his first varsity game after being the starting quarterback for junior varsity last year, Service sophomore Taurian Phillip propelled the Cougars to a resounding 32-7 road victory over the Wolverines to keep the ceremonial trophy in his team’s coffers for another year.

“It feels amazing to be able to come here, dominate and become (the) true South,” Phillip said. “That Southside is going to stay at Service with us.”

His four-touchdown performance highlighted what was an overall dominant showing from Service as he threw for three scores and ran another in on a 58-yard scamper up the right sideline. The 15-year-old signal-caller completed touchdown passes of 25, 61 and 26 yards with the first of his varsity career being to his older brother Cassidy Phillip, who plays wide receiver and safety for the Cougars.

“Last night I was just dreaming of throwing the first touchdown to my brother and it’s an amazing feeling, I love playing with my brother,” Phillip said.

Out in the Mat-Su on Friday, reigning Division I state champion West Anchorage began its title defense with a bold statement victory over Colony. The Eagles shut out the Knights 33-0 thanks to an offensive attack that was balanced and explosive and a defense that forced half a dozen turnovers, including a scoop-and-score. Senior quarterback Jethro DeCastro connected on a pair of long bombs for touchdowns and senior running back Zephaniah Sailele rumbled his way for more than 150 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

In what was by far the longest game of opening weekend, lasting more than three hours, Dimond defeated a formidable Bartlett team and in doing so, proved there is a new force to be reckoned with this year. The Lynx were led to a 35-30 victory over the Golden Bears, thanks in large part to the three-touchdown performance of junior quarterback Cayden Pili and an opportunistic pass defense that recorded four interceptions including the one to ice the game in the final minute.

“It just shows that they are going to do big things this year,” Pili said. “We’re going to get a lot better from here. This is just the start.”

In a matinee Cook Inlet Conference matchup Saturday between Bettye Davis East Anchorage and Juneau-Douglas, the hosting Thunderbirds were carried to a 22-6 victory by big plays through the air, several of which came from senior wide receiver Brandon Young, who had a monster game. Senior quarterback Toa Samoa hit Young for more than 150 receiving yards and a touchdown.

In the opening week of flag football, four-time defending conference champion Dimond started 1-0 with a forfeit win over Bartlett. South, last year’s runner-up, notched a pair of shutout victories over Service and Eagle River by a combined 36-0. The West girls set the tone for their boys on Friday night with a 32-0 shutout of the Colony-Palmer co-op.

The Eagle River Alaska American Legion baseball team officially wrapped up its 2024 summer season on a high note after becoming the first team from the Last Frontier to win a regional title Sunday. Led by tournament MVP pitcher Liam Lierman, who struck out 11 batters in five innings, the Wolves defeated Gallatin Valley 5-0 in Roseburg, Oregon, in the Northwest Class A Regional Tournament championship.

On the college scene, athletic programs for UAA and UAF were busy on the recruiting trail as they finalized rosters for the 2024-25 seasons.

The Seawolves cross-country running team announced the addition of 15 student-athletes, including Alaskans Edgar Vera of Juneau, Tobias Buchanan of Palmer, Abigail Harver of Kodiak and Gracie Norman of Palmer. While there weren’t any Alaskans among the eight newcomers the UAA gymnastics program recently announced, the Seawolves did cast a wide net with several of them coming from all over the world, including England, Jamaica and New Zealand.

Both UAF basketball programs added more talent with the women’s team bringing in five transfers and the men’s team brought in two additions via transfer from the junior college level. The Nanooks hockey program finalized its 2024-25 class with six transfers, including two forwards, three defensemen and a goalie.

UAA sprinter Joshua Caleb, who rewrote program and conference history books, will be going to the international level as he is set to compete Aug. 27-31 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. A Nigerian native, Caleb will represent his home country in the 400 meters and could get selected for the mixed or men’s 4x400 relays as well.

“My goals for the world U20 championships are to make history and make a name for myself and my country,” Caleb said in a statement.

This will mark the sophomore’s second time representing Nigeria on a big stage after making it to the 400-meter finals at the 2023 African U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia.

Lars Arneson and Shauna Severson were the winners of the Veins of Gold mountain race in Palmer on Saturday. The run started at Government Peak and followed the ridgeline over to April Bowl and down to the Summit Lake parking lot. Arneson finished in a time of 1:42:33 while Severson ran the course in 2:02:28 to win the women’s division.

Homer’s Kristen Faulkner continued her incredible summer to remember Sunday by finishing in 62nd place in the eighth and final stage of the Tour de France Femmes. Fresh off of becoming a global sensation after claiming a pair of gold medals in cycling at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 31-year-old Faulkner finished 38th in the final standings, which was the best among all American riders in the race this year.

Anchorage’s Brandon Pili continued to make a case for himself to earn a spot on the Miami Dolphins’ final 53-man roster for the second year in a row with his performance in the team’s 13-6 win over the Washington Commanders on Saturday. The 2023 undrafted free agent out of USC was a disruptive force in the backfield as both a run defender and interior pass rusher, recording a solo tackle for loss, a sack and a pair of quarterback hits in 27 defensive snaps.

Elsewhere around the league, Anchorage’s Edefuan Ulofoshio made his NFL debut by seeing the field for 25 snaps for the Buffalo Bills in a 9-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Palmer’s Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu played 17 snaps for the Baltimore Ravens in a 13-12 win over the Atlanta Falcons and Anchorage’s Tyree Wilson recorded a tackle for the Las Vegas Raiders in a 27-12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Eagle River’s Jordyn Bruce finished in third place at the inaugural Women’s Decathlon World Championships in Geneva, Ohio, earlier this month. In just her third time competing in the event, the 25-year-old amassed a personal-best 6,723 points in a 29-person field that consisted of athletes from 12 countries and one U.S. territory recognized by World Athletics.
