The Rewind: Dimond flag team, Kenai Central earn football titles; table set for DI and II championships

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

The second week of the 2023 Alaska high school football postseason featured overwhelming victories at all three levels of competition in all but one game. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team split two home conference matches while the hockey team split two road games in the Midwest. On the national stage, several local products contributed to recent victories for their respective team or had individual success.

Headlines and highlights

The 2023 Alaska high school football postseason raged on this past weekend and saw a lot of points scored in some dominant performances by heavily favored teams. In the Division III state championship game, top-seeded Kenai beat second-seeded Barrow 20-8 to win its first title in 11 years in the Kardinals’ first trip to the playoffs in seven years.

“The streets aren’t necessarily paved with gold down there in Kenai,” Kardinals coach Jake Brand said. “The community loves their kids, they love football, and they love the high school. It’s been a long time coming, and it means everything to Kenai.”

In Division I, top-seeded West shut out fourth-seeded Service for the second time in three weeks in a complete win of the season where the Eagles scored in all three phases. With the victory, the Eagles advanced to the state championship game for the first time in half a decade.

“I feel like our wins this year have been complete,” West coach Tim Davis said. “There’s no one star and that’s the best part about these games. They’ve just played so well as a unit and a brotherhood.”

West’s opponent in the Division I title bout was determined in the most competitive game of the weekend in the entire state. In Division II, top-seeded Soldotna and second-seeded Lathrop both cruised to semifinal victories on Saturday and will meet in the state championship for the fourth straight time. The Stars blew out North Pole by nearly 50 points in a 69-20 win and the Malemutes beat Eagle River by double figures 42-18.

For the fourth year in a row, Dimond proved the to be the cream of the crop prep flag football as the Lynx repeated as Cook Inlet Conference champions for the third consecutive season last Thursday with a 26-7 win over South. They were led to victory by CIC offensive player of the year Mai Mateaki who rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another just before halftime to give the Lynx some much-needed breathing in room in what began as a tightly-contested game.

“That was a huge score right before halftime,” Dimond head coach Kristen Melican-Nevala said. “Mai’s just such a competitor and has such confidence.”

On the college scene, the UAA volleyball team went 1-1 for the third straight week as they began their two-week home stand. Alaska stars shining Outside

Anchorage’s Obed Vargas scored the game-winning goal for the Team USA men’s soccer team in their 2-1 win over Mexico last Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona as they embark on their journey towards the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris. The 18-year-old midfielder also plays for the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.

Anchorage’s Edefuan Ulofoshio played a vital role in the University of Washington football team’s thrilling 36-33 victory over the University of Oregon this past Saturday. The former South High standout sacked Ducks’ quarterback Bo Nix on a play that forced the Ducks to settle for a field goal late in second quarter. He also finished as the Huskies’ leading tackler with a season-high 11 total tackles total tackles, including one for a loss.

Anchorage’s Tyree Wilson matched his single-game season high for total tackles by recording a pair of solos in 22 total defensive snaps (37 percent) in the Las Vegas Raiders’ 21-17 home victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday in Week 6 of the 2023 NFL regular season.

Anchorage’s Jeremy Swayman made his 2023 NHL regular season debut on Saturday and helped lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators. The 24-year-old goaltender stopped 33 shots in a decisive victory that included 13 attempts on Nashville power plays where his team was at a numbers disadvantage on the ice.

Anchorage’s Gabriela Zych went from being in seventh place to finishing third among a 46-woman field to win a bronze medal in the 10-meter air rifle final that was recently held in Columbus, Georgia. The even was the first of a three-part Rifle Olympic Trials. The Service alumnus and sophomore at the University of Memphis posted a score of 227.8 in the final which was 20 points better than the fourth-place finisher.

Gabriela shot incredible over the last two days,” head coach Morgan Phillips said in a statement from the school website. “This is a very high-pressure match and she handled it extremely well. To shoot a personal best on one of the biggest stages out there is incredible, but then to finish third in a final among the best shooters in the nation is even more impressive. I’m very proud of her and know this is only the beginning of the national level success that she will have.”

Anchorage Wolverines v. Janesville Jets at Ben Boeke Arena, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

The hometown junior hockey franchise will be back at Ben Beoke Ice Arena for the third weekend in a row where they will host their Midwest division foes for a two-game series. The first game will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. and the second at the same time on Saturday night. After being swept by the Jets in a two-game road series last month, the Wolverines will be looking to return the favor this weekend.
