The Heart Run makes in-person return as survivors of all ages reconvene for a good cause

Like most of the country and the world for that matter, the Alaska Heart Run operated on a hybrid model for the past two years as the COVID-19 pandemic raged on. The annual fundraiser for the American Heart Association made its in-person return on Saturday as survivors and supporters showed up in force.

“It feels good to be back,” said Mark Jacobsen of Anchorage. “Back with the runners, back with the survivors and it feels good.”

Jacobsen had been doing the Heart Run for several years before taking a break but after undergoing his own heart surgery just over three years ago, he felt compelled to return and give back.

“After I had this done, I needed to come back to help out and thank the heart institute,” Jacobsen said.

He was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation which is an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm also known as arrhythmia that can lead to blood clots in the heart. It increases the risk of stroke, heart failure other heart-related complications and impacted his ability to engage in physical activity like running.

“I went in and Dr. Woo, a electrophysiologist with Alaska Heart Institute, went in and did a cardiac ablation where they create scar tissue in my heart, burning and freezing stuff to prevent the brachial electrical stuff I had going on in my heart,” Jacobsen said.

He didn’t participate in the virtual Heart Run the past two years because he likes to actually be around his fellow runners. His wife, Kathy, ran with him but he somewhere along his way to the finish line, he left her behind and finished several minutes ahead of her with a time of 25:41.

“She is my trainer and personal nurse,” Jacobsen said.

Two survivors that participated in the untimed Heart Run and recently had heart surgery were Meg Baker and Matthew Hansen of Anchorage. Both had to undergo aortic valve replacement late in 2021 and met a little over a month ago in the same cardiac rehabilitation therapy class.

“We’re patients of Providence and Regional and I also went to the Cleveland Clinic,” Baker said. “Our cardiac rehab therapist coach, Cheryl Myers, this was her team last year.”

They sported red polyester shirts that ‘Straight Out of Cardiac Rehab’ printed on them that Baker designed herself. She is an artist for Studio One Art Design and Hansen is a civil engineer for the state of Alaska.

Baker had her surgery on Nov. 23, 2021, and had to go the Cleveland Clinic to see a specialist because the surgery could not be performed in Alaska.

“I had a mini sternotomy. My incision is only three inches,” said Baker. “As an athlete and young person at 31-years-old, I chose a tissue valve bioprosthetic so I’m probably looking at another open heart surgery. It doesn’t last a lifetime.”

She knew of her heart condition prior to getting surgery, has been an advocate of the cause for many years and has raised about $10,000 through fundraising over the years including nearly $2,000 in 2022 alone.

“I really like this event and Anchorage pride and all the different communities in Alaska that I am a part of but of course this is my favorite and this is my first year in the survivor photo,” Baker said.

This marked Hansen’s first time participating in the Heart Run after having a pair of heart surgeries.

“I had a full sternotomy as opposed to Meg and I have a big long scare,” Hansen said. “I had to go through it twice this winter. First on November 30th, had some complications and had to get medevaced down to Oregon to have it re-done.”

Baker believes a common misconception about their rehabilitation program that it is almost exclusively for senior citizens and recommends that anyone that has experiences any type of cardiovascular surgery or trauma to engage in cardiac rehab.

“Matt and I are benefiting from a coach that will get athletes like us back to climbing big mountains,” Baker said. “I want to go up to Everest and he wants to dive so we can both benefit from cardiac rehab.”

The parking lot at the Alaska Airlines Center was flooded with jovial faces of runners and spectators of all ages including Wayne Pichon of Anchorage, who after finishing the 5-kilometer course in an official time of 37:20, has now participated in 25 of 43 years the event has been in existence.

“I walked my first heart run but every heart run since then, I’ve ran,” Pichon said.

Twenty-five years ago, the 75-year-old survivor had to get an unexpected quadruple bypass when he was 50. He had just returned from a trip to Kodiak when he began experiencing pain in his chest. He called the first cardiologist he saw in the yellow pages

“I called this guy and he got me in fairly soon, did a heart cath and found out that the four major vessels were all blocked and least of which was 92 percent,” Pichon said. “I was a walking dead man.”
