Dimond-West wins title to reclaim its place as Anchorage’s best girls high school hockey team

Power has been restored to the Dimond-West house.

Anchorage’s most successful girls high school hockey team is back on top after Dimond-West beat South-Bartlett 2-0 in the city championship Saturday at Ben Boeke Ice Arena.

It is Dimond-West’s league-best sixth title, and it snapped its rival’s three-year run of championships.

After missing the title game for the first time since 2009, Dimond-West had a little extra incentive going into this season. And after losing to South-Bartlett in their most recent meeting before the title game, the sense of urgency was renewed for Saturday’s finale.

“I’m super proud of my team,” said Dimond-West coach Brian Gross. “Everyone contributed.”

Hazel Fuhs and Janessa Reimers scored for Dimond-West.

Fuhs, one of eight freshmen on the team, scored a power-play goal in the first period to get Dimond-West on the board.

Reimers, the team’s only senior, assisted on the play.

“I got a great pass from Janessa,” Fuhs said.

In the second period, Dimond-West got some breathing room when Reimers found the back of the net with 15 seconds remaining in the period.

“It was my only goal of the season, so it was really nice to accomplish that,” Reimers said.

Reimers said she and her teammates put in the effort to earn the title.

“I think we deserved it,” she said, “We worked hard all season.”

Fuhs has designs on continued success.

“I think we could get a good streak going.”

Zoie Campbell, Dimond-West’s sophomore goalie, made 17 saves, including a memorable one in the second period against Tatum Lund — “their best player, in my opinion ... her coming down on a breakaway, that was definitely nerve-wracking.”

Brielle Akagi, South-Bartlett’s junior goalie, had a strong game against an aggressive Dimond-West offense.

“Both goalies played great games,” said South-Bartlett coach Bryce Akagi.

Campbell, like Fuhs, is optimistic about Dimond-West’s future.

“We have a lot of young girls, and the team is only going to get better.”
