Knik Little League baseball team grabs state championship and a spot in regional tournament

The Knik Little League baseball team beat Juneau in four games to win the Alaska state championship and earn a spot in next week’s Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, California.

Knik’s team of 10-to-12-year-olds from Eagle River clinched the state title Monday with an 11-3 victory over Juneau.

Knik beat Juneau 4-2 and 6-3 in the first two games of the best-of-5 series. Juneau won the third game 6-3 to extend the series.

At the regional tournament, Knik will play its first game at 8 a.m. ADT Monday at San Bernardino’s Houghton Stadium. The team will take on the winner of a Sunday game between Washington and Oregon.

The tournament also includes teams from Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

Last month, Nunaka Valley Little League’s softball team represented Alaska at the Western Region tournament in San Bernardino.

The Anchorage team was eliminated with a 1-2 record but the girls made some noise in their second game when pitcher Ori Samuelu-Pedro threw a no-hitter to lead the Alaskans to a 6-0 win over Utah.

In other games, Nunaka Valley lost 5-0 to Washington and 10-4 to Northern California.
