Eagle River swimmer John Heaphy placed 27th in his event Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials for swimming in Omaha, Nebraska.
Heaphy, one of 49 finishers in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, had a time of 1 minute, 1.92 seconds. He was seeded 26th in the event, based on his personal-best time of 1:01.53.
The top 16 swimmers advanced to Sunday’s semifinals, including Michael Andrew, whose time of 58.19 was the fastest in the preliminaries and one of only four sub-1:00 times.
Heaphy is one of two Alaskans who qualified for the meet, which will determine America’s team for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Lydia Jacob of Seward is scheduled to swim in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke prelims on Monday morning.
