Anchorage’s Overbaugh gets another crack at NFL with Denver Broncos

Anchorage's Jeff Overbaugh is getting another shot at making an NFL roster and this time he's following in the footsteps of former Alaska linemen Mark Schlereth and Chris Kuper in Denver.

The Broncos picked up the Service High grad and 10 other players Tuesday.

"It's a tremendous opportunity to go out and play the game I love and compete and show that I belong in the NFL," Overbaugh said by cellphone. "It's a great deal as a competitor. I'm just ready to take advantage of it."

Overbaugh, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound long snapper, had a perfect senior season with San Diego State in 2015. He didn't botch a snap on all 134 extra points, 55 field goals and 164 punts.

Overbaugh spent last offseason with the Rams when he was signed as an undrafted free agent. He was cut one week prior to the season.

His new contract with Denver is a "future contract," meaning he'll officially sign with the Broncos on March 9 and be added to their initial 90-man roster.

Overbaugh said he worked out with the Seahawks and Redskins during the season, but he spent most of the last four months practicing and training in San Diego as he waited for his next opportunity. He trains five days a week with former NFL kickers John Carney, a two-time Pro-Bowler, and Mike Husted, the former all-time scoring leader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I'm tremendously blessed with resources down here in San Diego," Overbaugh said. "There are a couple NFL legends who are down here and run camps and have gyms down here. I work with them five days a week on the field and in the weight room."

The Broncos have two other long snappers under contract: 10-year veteran Thomas Gafford and injured rookie Casey Kreiter.

Most NFL teams only keep one active long snapper during the regular season.

Overbaugh said he'll continue training in San Diego until he joins the team in Denver. Denver coach Gary Kubiak resigned Monday, the Broncos will be able to start offseason workouts with their new coach two weeks early on April 3, according to the NFL's website.

"I'm really excited for the next step," Overbaugh said. "I'm proud to be an Alaskan and follow in the footsteps of Schlereth and Kuper, and see if I can hopefully stick on the (53-man roster)."
