Micah Foreman, an 18-year-old from Eagle River, captured the silver medal in the world-class, black-belt sparring division at the U.S. national taekwondo championships last week in Richmond, Virginia.
He is the third Alaskan in 40 years to earn a medal in that division, according to Alaska taekwondo officials.
Foreman won his two preliminary matches by point gap and ended his semifinal match in the first minute by knocking out his opponent.
He lost the championship match 14-10 but his silver medal earns him preferential ranking at the 2017 U.S. team trials, which will determine the U.S. team for next year's world championships in Korea.
Foreman's medal was one of 20 collected by Alaska athletes at the national meet.
