In the tiny Ingalikmiut Eskimo village on Little Diomede Island at the far western edge of Alaska, 120 people live in the middle of the Bering Sea, right along the International Dateline. Just more than 2 miles away from the Russian island of Big Diomede to the west, it's one of the few places in Alaska where residents can actually see Russia from their homes, as the popular joke goes. Not only can residents see Russia, they could walk to it during the winter when the ocean between the two islands freezes completely. No one does, though. It would likely cause an international incedent. About 100 vigilant Russian military personnell staff a base on Big Diomede, just across the narrow channel.
