An 8-year-old boy in Ambler was accidentally shot and killed by another child while they were playing with a firearm on Saturday, Alaska State Troopers said.
Troopers first received a report at 11 p.m. Saturday of an accidental shooting in Ambler, a community of about 250 people on the Kobuk River in the Northwest Arctic region.
Troopers took a commercial flight to Ambler, arriving around 2 a.m. Sunday.
"An investigation showed that C.G., 8, of Ambler, was playing with his cousins in the yard of their residence," troopers wrote in an online dispatch. "While playing in a nearby shed, the children obtained a loaded firearm from the rafters."
One of the children, not realizing the weapon was loaded, shot the 8-year-old, who died of his injuries.
