Candidates for Alaska governor to debate the Permanent Fund and dividends

Three candidates in this year's race for Alaska governor will debate Monday how to best manage the Permanent Fund and dividends.

The Anchorage debate is free and open to the public. It will go from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Free parking is available in the university's west, south and sports campus lots.

Democratic candidate Mark Begich, incumbent Gov. Bill Walker, an independent, and Billy Toien, the Libertarian candidate, have confirmed they'll attend, according to UAA.

Republican candidate Mike Dunleavy will not be at the debate. His campaign staff told debate organizers that he has a scheduling conflict. He's attending a fundraiser and reception at Advanced Pain Centers of Alaska in Anchorage, according to Daniel McDonald, a spokesman for Dunleavy's campaign. Dunleavy will attend three other candidate forums this week, McDonald said.

The Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage is organizing Monday's debate. The event is co-sponsored by the Anchorage Daily News, the UAA Economics Club, the Atwood Foundation and the UAA Seawolf Debate Program.

The Daily News will livestream the debate on its Facebook page and on adn.com.
