Sled dogs killed and injured when snowmachine strikes team training on Denali Highway

Two dogs died and four others were injured when a sled dog team and a snowmachine collided Friday night on the Denali Highway near Cantwell, Alaska State Troopers say.

The musher, who was not identified, was not injured, a troopers spokesman said Monday.

The collision occurred about 8:30 p.m., troopers said, near Mile 118 of the 135-mile highway, a popular area to run dog teams including for those training for races like the Iditarod or Yukon Quest.

The incident remains under investigation, troopers said. No arrests have been made or citations issued as of Monday morning, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said. He did not answer a question about whether the snowmachine driver stayed at the scene of the collision.
