Letter: Why would we roll back polio vaccines?

I am forced to wonder,  what the heck …? I am now 74 years old, but I clearly remember when I was about 9 years old and my young cousin contracted polio. In my mind’s eye I can see him withering away from the onset of the virus and finally succumbing.

At the funeral, I joined my parents in passing by the open casket and seeing his withered body dressed in his Sunday best. There was an ugly bruise on his forehead of which I later inquired my mother about. The little boy simply tried get out of his hospital bed but his little paralyzed legs would not support him and he fell, striking his head on something.

I remember visiting before he contracted the illness; he was an energetic little boy no different from me. Then he was paralyzed and then he was gone. My God, why would anyone even suggest decertifying the vaccine that has helped so many avoid this? Perhaps study it all you want but never do anything to put little ones at risk of this horrible disease!
