With Donald Trump planning on imposing 25% tariffs on Day One, house prices will soar once again. We import a huge amount of lumber from Canada. Logs are cut on government land, so prices are cheaper because it’s not private land like in the U.S. They raised the tariffs on Canadian lumber to more than 14% this year to encourage more U.S. timber sales.
Other countries are now sending lumber to the U.S., including Finland. I guess if that added tariff up to 25% happens, some houses we buy will have Finnish lumber, not our neighboring country. That’s just goofy, but then, the next four years will be goofy as all get out.
