Letters to the Editor

Letter: Vote by Nov. 5

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that this presidential election is significant. In fact, it’s probably the most important one in our lifetimes. Trump has promised to arrest political opponents, move millions of immigrants to camps and deport them, create tariffs that will increase consumer prices, and scrap the Department of Education, just to give you a sample. His comments about the “enemy from within,” being a dictator “on Day One,” and “If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” are even more chilling signs of his authoritarian tendencies. We need someone in the White House, who wants to serve the American people, not herself — like Kamala Harris.

There are also crucial issues in our state election. Keeping Mary Peltola in our U.S. House seat will help Congress be more productive and less partisan. Voting no on Ballot Measure 2 will keep elections in the hands of people, not parties. Electing moderates and progressives will help the Alaska Legislature get more done, ensure reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, and enhance public education. For more specific recommendations, I encourage you to look at the endorsements of the NEA-Alaska PACE committee and Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates Alaska.

Check elections.alaska.gov for information on the different ways you can cast your ballot. Make sure you vote by Nov. 5 to preserve our rights and our American form of democracy.
