My dad insisted that his five daughters memorize the preamble to the Constitution. Like typical kids, we rolled our eyes and grumbled, but we did it and I still remember those majestic words.
I hold our Constitution in great esteem today and cringe as I watch Donald Trump’s MAGA rallies. Those who claim we need to “make America great again” seem to have forgotten what really has made America great.
America’s greatness isn’t something we lost and need to recapture. Her greatness is the Constitution, giving us the most remarkable system of self-government that the world has ever seen. This form of government allows for a peaceful transfer of power that has occurred without turmoil since 1789, more than 235 years ago. I pray it remains intact.
