Letters to the Editor

Letter: Begich and fisheries

I vote fish. I am supporting Nick Begich for Congress and will be casting my vote for him on Nov. 5.

The seafood industry is experiencing unprecedented challenges with low prices and high operating costs of fuel, insurance, maintenance, and gear. We need strong leaders who can work to provide relief for Alaska’s fishermen and their families.

Begich will place a priority on fishery issues and work toward being seated on the important Natural Resources Committee. His door will be open to all Alaskans as he works to be a problem solver and consensus builder for the seafood industry. He will actively work across the aisle to create a fish policy that will benefit Alaska.

An important issue of concern is bycatch. Begich has traveled throughout the state meeting with subsistence, personal use, sport and commercial harvesters and he has stated that we can and should do more to reduce bycatch. He understands the role Congress has in addressing this important issue and has pledged to work toward real solutions, not just pandering to one group or another.

Nick Begich is the best choice during this crucial time when serious decisions need to be made regarding the future of fishing in Alaska.
