Letter: Christians and Trump

Thanks to Rev. Matt Schultz for the Oct. 20 commentary on Christian nationalism. He well summarized the hypocritical and power-motivated perversion of Christian teachings in the history of our country and other nations.

In my view, Donald Trump continues to misuse Jesus’ Gospel of love for his own selfish aims. Love of neighbor, including immigrants, love of enemy, the Golden Rule, the equal worth of all humans, telling the truth, the sanctity of marriage, and basic human rights: these and more tenets are meaningful to Trump only when he can use them to further his effort to become demagogue and dictator.

Last Sunday at Mass, the Gospel reading was Jesus’ teaching that to be great, to be first, one must be last, a servant. Trump’s actions and statements do not conform to the principle of servant leadership. I don’t understand how a sincere believer could vote for Trump. Is such a choice a rational act?
