Letter: Pedestrians crossing roads

I have started counting how many people on foot or bicycle could be hit by my car if I weren’t paying attention. This morning, driving through Midtown (up Benson Boulevard, down C Street, up Fireweed Lane to the New Seward Highway and onto Tudor Road), six different people crossed in front of my car. One was in the crosswalk but didn’t have the light. All were in black or other dark clothes. Last week, a man on a bike raced across six lanes of traffic on Raspberry Road and did not slow down at all to see if traffic was moving. Do not blame drivers who are following the speed limit and law, and avoid headlines that imply that all the drivers are at fault. People need to take responsibility for their actions — car versus pedestrian often doesn’t work out well for the pedestrian.

Our Assembly shouldn’t be making it harder for cars to move around this city.
