The Assembly’s rejection of Amy Demboski’s settlement is a significant mistake. This treatment will discourage whistleblowers from coming forward. Labeling the settlement as a “money grab” and claiming that it will serve as a deterrent only fosters an environment where employees feel they cannot report unethical or illegal practices within the Anchorage municipality.
How does rejecting a settlement that could resolve this issue without costly litigation truly defend citizens’ tax dollars? Moreover, holding a closed briefing without allowing Assembly members to openly debate this matter undermines transparency and accountability. Are employees now expected to ignore violations of city laws, unethical behavior and discrimination for fear of retaliation?
By voting against the settlement, these Assembly members send a troubling message: that employees should remain silent and tolerate a hostile work environment. Amy Demboski bravely spoke up about her concerns and faced wrongful termination for her courage. Now, the Assembly appears to be punishing her once again.
Imagine if more employees at Boeing had felt empowered to speak out; perhaps lives could have been saved, and a culture focused on safety rather than profit could have flourished. We must support those who stand up for integrity and accountability.
