Letters to the Editor

Letter: Disaster misinformation

I thought I’d reached the limits of my anger and frustration at all the lies.

But on Oct. 4, Donald Trump and his henchmen — including a bizarrely overthe- top Elon Musk — used the tragedy of Hurricane Helene to launch ever more dangerous, costly, life-threatening lies. By spreading the falsehood that the Biden administration raided FEMA funds to “use it for illegal migrants,” they have created so much confusion that desperate people in the middle of the flood zone may not be seeking the help they need.

The truth is that FEMA’s funding is currently fine. The Republican governor of South Carolina thanked the president for a “superb” response. Local groups are begging for the misinformation to stop so that rescue workers can save lives. But speaking the truth is not a successful strategy for Mr. Trump to reach his ultimate goal. The truth is, he is selling nothing but boasts, defamations, smears, fabrications and lies. He can’t handle the truth.
